Getting Into a Groove
Hello Area 72!
As I settle into my role as Area Language Coordinator, it’s been an exciting and productive month. The Hispanic Districts have decided which committees they’d like interpreted for this rotation: Public Information and Grapevine/Literature. To support this, we provided interpretation at both the Public Information and Grapevine/Literature quarterlies this past quarter, and will continue to do so for the remainder of Panel 75. Additionally, we offered interpretation at the GSR School on February 9th.
We also held our first Language Steering Committee meeting, which had a fantastic turnout! During the meeting, we elected a Committee Secretary and discussed creating a new position: the Interpretation Equipment Coordinator, responsible for coordinating the transportation of interpretation equipment to and from Area events. Since the start of the year, we’ve translated over twenty-five documents—totaling more than eighty thousand words.
Much of my focus this past month has been on creating systems to streamline our translation and interpretation services for Area 72. This has included revising the P75 Language Committee Hand-off Document, building an annual events calendar for interpretation tracking, and delegating tasks to our enthusiastic committee members.
I want to express my heartfelt thanks to our interpreters for their dedication over the past two months, as well as their patience with me as I transition into this new role. A special thanks to Claudia—our lead interpreter and translator—who has truly been a rockstar and a joy to work with. Her willingness to make herself available for Area 72 has been invaluable, and we are incredibly grateful for her time and expertise.
I’d also like to thank the members of our newly formed Language Steering Committee. We’ll be meeting monthly to delegate tasks and ensure no one person is overwhelmed with too much work. As a reminder, we’re all volunteering our time, and one of my main goals this year is to make sure the service work remains balanced and enjoyable. If you’re interested in attending a Language Steering Committee meeting, please reach out to me at the email listed below.
I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve Area 72. I look forward to seeing you all at the April Quarterly!
Sincerely,
Charley P.
