By the time you read this, we will have had our second Young People’s Quarterly. It will be on Saturday, April 26th, from 12-3 PM at the Lynnwood Alano Club and on zoom. We are excited to have speakers joining us from Area 8, San Diego/Imperial. Members from the Young People in Alcoholics Anonymous Coordinating Committee will be joining us to talk about how they carry the message to young alcoholics in the community, as well as how they attract young people in AA to general service. I am excited to share what we learn from them and I’m grateful for them coming to share their experience, strength, and hope. Over the last few months, I have been contacted by several new district YP chairs and I’m looking forward to hearing about the continued service work being done across many districts in Area 72.
Regarding our newsletter topic this month, “AA’s Third Legacy”, it makes me reflect on what it really means to be of service. Sometimes, I get so wrapped up in all my committee work, that I forgot the small, important ways that I can practice our third legacy. I forget what it was like to be a scared 18-year-old girl walking into her first meeting. When a newcomer (or any member) walks into a meeting, it is my responsibility and privilege to reach out my hand and make them feel welcome. I want them to feel the spirit of love and service in the room when they walk in. I want them to believe (even if it’s just a little bit) that Alcoholics Anonymous is a place for them too and that there is a solution for them. Sometimes I think we as alcoholics (and humans) can overcomplicate things. If I remember my primary purpose of carrying the message to the still suffering alcoholic, it makes everything a lot simpler. I strive to keep our third legacy of service at the forefront of my mind in my AA meetings as well as when I’m chairing the Young People’s committee. When I keep these things in my mind and in my heart, I know that I am doing my higher power’s will.
Thank you for allowing me to serve Area 72! Please feel free to reach out to me anytime!
In love and service,
Heather S
